Doom Eternal is Now Optimized for Xbox Series X|S

Microsoft’s Bethesda Softworks announced a major upgrade to Doom Eternal that brings optimizations for the Xbox Series X|S consoles.

“Wield the awesome power of the Doom Slayer like never before with Doom Eternal’s free next-gen upgrade today,” Microsoft’s Parker Wilhelm writes. “Update 6, available now, makes Doom Eternal Optimized for Xbox Series X|S, adding improved visuals, increased performance, and support for ray tracing and 4K resolution at 60 frames per second. Update 6 also features a new Master Level to test your skills, a new Battlemode arena, and more.”

Naturally, I’m mostly curious about those Xbox Series X|S optimizations, which promise to deliver an even more impressive visual presentation. On Xbox Series X, you can now choose between three visual modes: Performance Mode, which requires a 120 Hz display (1800p at 120fps), Balanced Mode (2160p at 60fps), and Ray Tracing Mode (1800p at 60fps). And on Xbox Series S, you get two choices: Performance Mode: (1080p at 120fps) and Balanced Mode (1440p at 60fps).

It’s a big update, from what I can see: I saw this earlier today and it was roughly 50 GB on the Series X. But it should be worth it, on either console.

The Xbox Series X has a higher resolution in Performance Mode than the PS5, but the PS5 has a higher resolution in Ray-tracing Mode.

Neither console can do ray-tracing in 4K though, despite marketing fluff, not that I care.

I’d much rather see an option to do more realistic graphics (more polys and better textures so that things like character models aren’t in the realm of the Uncanny Valley) with ray-tracing at 1080p so long as the 60fps frame rate is maintained.

I game on a monitor, not into the TV thing. I have run my Xbox Series X on a 32inch 4K 60hz monitor, a 27inch 1440p 120hz monitor and a 1080p 120hz monitor all of which had VRR enabled as well.

120hz > 4K all day everyday. The smoothness it brings to the screen and your input lag just makes gaming better. Even with games that can’t even get close to 120FPS, the 120hz refresh rate renders whatever your FPS is quicker (8ms vs 16ms) and does the same thing to input, decreasing the move to screen update interval.

I would love to try a 4K 120hz HDMI 2.1 monitor but I do not believe there are any avalible as of yet. I think they are coming but they will probably be 1K or higher.

One argument for the 1080p/120hz monitor would be that most games that have a performance mode, drop down to 1080p. If that is your ever day resolution, you are just getting a FPS boost. If on a 4K monitor, you will get the FPS boost but drop down to 1080p on your 4K monitor. Most of the time when that happens it looks like someone rubbed a stick of butter on the screen.

When the LG C9 came out they marketed it as a large format monitor. I’m guessing the size is what bothers you?

As a former PC gamer I don’t like to sit on a couch in game for one. So 32inch is the max I can do at a desk. My current XSX monitor is 27inch, which is perfect for 1440p IMHO.

Also TV’s in general have a much higher response time, especially compared to gaming monitors. So the input lag is very much felt moving from a gaming monitor to a TV. I am sure there are some great TV’s out there for 1K or more that have response times like my $299 gaming monitor. Certainly better HDR.

Anyone else having issues on the site right now?

It’s very slow generally; sometimes a Cloudflare screen says the server is timing-out; there are messages saying "there has been a critical error on your website", related to WordPress; and if I try to create a Forum Post, it goes to a "Shoot, we can’t find the page you’re looking for!" error page.
