ExpressVPN has announced the immediate availability of Lightway, a faster and more reliable VPN protocol that’s backed by an independent security audit.
“ExpressVPN is constantly innovating in a relentless pursuit of new ways to make our services—and indeed all VPNs—more secure,” ExpressVPN explains. “That’s a key reason we developed Lightway: Our aim was to create a VPN protocol that puts privacy and security first, without compromising on speed or connection reliability.”

Lightway brings faster, more reliable virtual private network (VPN) connections to ExpressVPN customers, and the firm reports that the new protocol offers 2.5x faster connections, and increases speeds by two times while improving reliability by 40 percent.
But the bigger deal is that Lightway’s core source code has been published under a GNU General Public License (GPL) v2 open-source license on GitHub, allowing anyone, even its competitors to use and contribute to the code. ExpressVPN also had Lightway evaluated by Cure53, a cybersecurity firm, to ensure that it is secure.
“The codebase observed on Lightway Core follows consistent coding patterns and exhibits—in the testers’ view—a high quality,” Cure53 says. You can read the full report here.
Lightway is now available in ExpressVPN for Android, iOS, Windows, Mac, Linux, and routers. You can learn more about ExpressVPN and Lightway on the ExpressVPN website.
