Samsung Announces new Samsung Galaxy S22 Family and Galaxy Tab S8 Series

Samsung Galaxy S22 Series

Samsung has just unveiled the latest additions to its family of Galaxy smartphones and tablets, which include the flagship Galaxy S22, S22+, and S22 Ultra smartphones. Samsung remains one of the top smartphone manufacturers worldwide and the Galaxy S22 series once again delivers top-of-the-line specs with a real focus on camera quality.

The Galaxy S22 and S22+ both feature dynamic cameras with advanced intelligent image processing. The list of sensors include a 50MP main camera, a 10MP tele-lens, and a 12MP ultra-wide lens, all beefed up with Samsung’s latest AI algorithm that helps to make pictures look better even in low light.

These new Galaxy smartphones are also the first in the family to use a 4nm SoC with advanced AI and ML algorithms, coupled with 8GB of RAM and up to 256GB of storage. Both the Galaxy S22 and S22+ also feature the same AMOLED display with a 120Hz frame rate (240Hz in Game Mode), and they also support the latest wireless standards including 5G, WiFi 6E, and Bluetooth 5.2. The only notable differences between the two models are the screen size (6.1” vs 6.6”) and battery capacity (3700mAh vs. 4,500mAh).

Samsung also announced today the Galaxy S22 Ultra, which according to the company combines “the unrivalled power of the Note series and the pro-grade camera and performance of the S series.” This Galaxy S22 Ultra comes with Samsung’s signature S Pen, and the company has worked to reduce latency by 70% compared to previous models.

The Galaxy S22 Ultra also comes with 5 different cameras including 12MP Ultra-Wide Camera, a 108 MP Wide Camera, two different 10MP Telephoto Camera, as well as a 40MP Front Camera. “S22 Ultra is built with a 2.4um pixel sensor – Samsung’s largest pixel sensor ever, enabling its camera lenses to capture more light and data, optimizing the lighting and detail of your video clips,” the company said today.

Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra

The other interesting things about the Galaxy S22 Ultra include a massive 6.8” AMOLED Display with a peak brightness of 1,750 nits, a 5,000mAh battery, and the high-end models also come with 12GB of RAM and up to 1TB of storage. Notably, Samsung announced today that will now offer up to four generations of One UI and Android OS upgrades on the Galaxy S22, S22+, S22 Ultra, and other select Galaxy devices.

If Android tablets still remain far less popular than Apple’s iPads, Samsung is trying to change that with its new Galaxy Tab S8 Series. There’s once again three different models, the Galaxy Tab S8, S8+, and S8 Ultra, and the latter comes with an impressive 14.6-inch AMOLED screen.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 series

The Galaxy Tab S8 series should be good for productivity thanks to ultra-wide front cameras, a three-microphone setup, as well S Pen support on the S8+ and S8 Ultra models. On the software front, Samsung is continuing to invest into Samsung Dex, its productivity solution that provides a desktop experience on Galaxy tablets. The Galaxy Tab S8 Series will also introduce a new Second Screen experience that lets Windows users use the tablets as a portable second monitor.

The Galaxy S22, 22+, and S22 Ultra will be available in carrier and unlocked versions starting on February 25, 2022. The Galaxy Tab S8 Series will also launch on February 25, and all models are now available for pre-order on Samsung’s website. The Galaxy S22 starts at $799.99, the S22+ starts at $999.99 and the S22 Ultra starts at $1,199.99. Prices for the Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 start at $699, but Samsung currently offers various pre-order bonuses and trade-in offers for all its new Galaxy smartphones and tablets on its website.

I’m pretty sure Samsung killed the Ultra series and renamed the Note looking at the new (old) design.

I’m a little disappointed that they think reducing battery size year over year is a good idea, it’s not. I am impressed that they have reduced the aspect ratio, so it might actually fit *within* pockets this time. If I were buying one of these I’d want something overall smaller, but it’s moving in the right direction in terms of size.

Problem with Samsung is that they listen too much to reviewers complains. They complained about the plastic back of the S21 and now they made it glass (which is worse and makes a case a must) and reduced the battery to make it the same weight as the S21. Stupid company, but what can you do…. Let’s hope battery life is not that bad. The only thing I am glad is that the S22 is smaller than the S21, wish it was even smaller….

You know, if Samsung stopped trying to duplicate all the core apps and just focused on making a really great device with a really great take on Android I’d probably consider picking up the S22 Ultra. I know Samsung has been better in this space and have given the option to just disable apps in the launcher now. But, I don’t want them at all and I don’t want Facebook or other third party apps built into the OS.

I mostly like Samsung’s take on Android with their latest One UI builds. I also still appreciate and like their DeX integration (though I’m disappointed they gave up on Linux on DeX). I may need to kick the tires on a Galaxy device again in the near future.

I never really understood all the Samsung hate for duplicate apps. Just don’t open them, it’s really that simple.

I installed the Google Message and Phone app (mostly for the spam prevention which google does better) and use Outlook for emails. The other apps never get in the way, nor do I accidently open them.

I swear people just need a reason to hate on Samsung sometimes. My S21 Ultra has been fantastic.

This. I don’t use the Samsung apps (although I know plenty of people who do) and they never get in the way. Spend 5 minutes when you first get the phone disabling, uninstalling, or hiding them, and you never have to mess with them again.

It’s not like it’s 2010 and everyone is always running out of space on their phones, this is really a non-issue. People really are just looking for a reason to complain.

Agree, I prefer the Niagara launcher and could hide them (so don’t even appear in app list unless ‘reveal hidden’) but haven’t bothered.

A nice trend with little smaller phones again. I would consider the S22.

And now Samsung got a very long time of software support to.

Is this on Paul’s review schedule. It would appear from the outside looking in that the S22 family is a marginal upgrade at best from the S21 family. I am in desperate need of upgrading my S20 ultra + (camera just does not focus) and I was excited the S22 + was on the horizon and now it just seems like a non story.
