Linux for beginners

Paul’s recent article Linux Mint “Wilma” reminded me that I haven’t really looked into Linux as much as I’d hoped. So, for those that have experience with Linux, is there a particular flavor of Linux that is better for beginners? If it helps, I’m looking to attempt to do every day type computing on the Linux box. No gaming or video editing but I can see light to medium photo work if the experiment works out.
