VLC player classic with a fixed video size

Im a huge fan of the VLC classic desktop media player. I always had the problem to resize the window so that it fits to my monitor size. I want the window to have the size of hd ready, meaning it should have a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixel. Every attempt to make the ratio stay this way failed so far. If you have a solution, I would be grateful. Thanks.
