Apple to Charge More For iPhone 16 Pro Battery Replacements

Apple will charge more for out-of-warranty battery replacements for the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max models, which will start shipping on Friday, September 21. As reported by MacRumors, Apple indicates on its iPhone repair and service page that battery replacements for an iPhone 16 Pro or Pro Max that’s out of warranty will cost $119, which is $20 more than what the company charges for all iPhone 15 models.

Replacing the battery for the regular iPhone 16 or iPhone 16 Plus will still cost $99, so there’s no price increase here. Apple will also continue to replace batteries for free for AppleCare+ customers, though only if the battery holds less than 80 percent of its original capacity.

It’s not exactly clear why Apple decided to charge more iPhone 16 Pro battery replacements. However, the company indicated during its keynote last week that it had redesigned the internals of its latest iPhones to include bigger batteries. The iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max also feature a new architecture to improve heat dissipation, and the result should be an up to 20 percent better sustained performance.

Apple promises up to 27 hours of video playback on the iPhone 16 Pro compared to 23 hours on last year’s iPhone 15 Pro. The iPhone 16 Pro Max, however, should deliver up to 33 hours of video playback, which on paper is the best battery life ever seen in an iPhone. While the rest of the upgrades seem pretty much iterative, the bigger batteries on the iPhone 16 Pro lineup should make quite a difference this year, and even the cheaper iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus are getting bigger batteries as well.
