The new Windows App that Microsoft has been testing for almost a year is now generally available on Windows, macOS, iOS, iPadOS, and the web. It’s also available in public preview on Android and ChromeOS.
The Windows App is designed as a unified hub for accessing and managing various Windows services, including Windows 365 Cloud PCs, virtual desktops, and local PCs. It supports Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop, Remote Desktop, Remote Desktop Services, and Microsoft Dev Box.
“Whether you are an IT administrator or an end user, Windows App provides immense value. IT admins benefit from enhanced security and streamlined management, while end users can tailor their experience to fit their personal workflows,” Microsoft explained on its Windows IT Pro blog.
The Windows App lets users customize the Home Screen to simplify the management of cloud PCs, virtual desktops, and remote PCs. For desktop users, the app also supports multiple monitors, dynamic display resolutions, and USB redirection. For iOS and macOS users, the Windows App recently added the ability to switch accounts more easily when using a Microsoft Entra account. The Windows version of the Windows App will replace the existing Windows 365 app on the Microsoft Store. On other platforms, it will replace Microsoft’s existing remote desktop apps. If you’re an IT pro, the company published various resources to help you plan for the transition to this new unified gateway to Windows.
