Spotify is launching a new Offline Backup playlist for Premium users that will be automatically populated with songs to listen to while offline. The company has been testing the feature with some users since last year, and it will start rolling out later this week to iOS and Android users.
“Offline Backup takes your queued and recently streamed tracks and creates one easy-to-access playlist that is unique to you,” the company explained today. “To do this, we include tracks already stored on your device as part of your regular listening on Spotify.”
This Offline Backup playlist will appear automatically in the Home feed when Premium users are offline. However, it first requires to turn on offline listening in the app’s settings.
To make it more easily accessible, this Offline Backup playlist can be added to users’ Spotify library. The song selection will evolve over time based on users’ listening habits, and it’s also possible to filter songs in the playlist by artist, mood, and genre.
If you’re familiar with YouTube Music, you may know that the service has a similar “Offline mixtape” feature for Premium subscribers. It intelligently downloads music to listen offline, and the music selection is refreshed every 24 hours.
