YouTube announced today that it is increasing the time limit on Shorts from 1 minute to 3 minutes, along with various other updates.
“Get ready, Shorts creators and fans,” YouTube’s Todd Sherman writes. “Today we’re announcing updates to YouTube Shorts, making it easier and more fun than ever to create and connect. Whether you’re looking to discover something new or dive into creating, these tools will empower you to express yourself, get inspired, engage more deeply and keep up with the latest trends.”
Here’s what’s new.
Longer Shorts. Starting October 15, creators can publish Shorts that are up to 3 minutes long, three times the current limit.
Improved Shorts player. The Shorts player was recently updated with a streamlined new look that doesn’t hide as much of the content as the previous player.
Templates. YouTube added a “Use this template” feature to “Remix” so you can match the look and sound of a favorite Short.
Easier remixing. In the coming months, you’ll be able to remix clips from favorite videos and music videos into a short directly from Shorts camera. It will work with multiple YouTube clips as well.
Veo model support. Google Deepmind’s most powerful language model, Veo, is coming to YouTube Shorts so you can easily add generative AI backgrounds, clips, and more to your Shorts.
Trends. The Shorts trends page on mobile now highlights locale-specific trending Shorts content.
Comments previews. Coming soon, you’ll see previews of comments on Shorts so you can see what people are saying without leaving Shorts.
Fewer Shorts if desired. YouTube will soon let users see fewer Shorts via a new setting so they can temporarily focus on longer form YouTube content in their Home feed.
