Google and Samsung Partner on Immersive Audio

Samsung smart TV with Eclipsa Audio

Google and Samsung partnered to create a Dolby Atmos alternative called Eclipsa Audio that will debut on new Samsung TVs and soundbars in 2025. Samsung unveiled the work as part of a pre-CES announcement for its new smart TVs and soundbars. And Google will make it available to creators who upload content to YouTube.

“We are proud to lead the industry with the integration of Eclipsa Audio into our 2025 TV and soundbar lineup,” Samsung executive vice president Taeyong Son said. “This innovation opens new possibilities for immersive audio experiences and reinforces our commitment to shaping the future of home entertainment.”

Samsung describes Eclipsa Audio as “a groundbreaking 3D audio technology” that allows content creators to adjust the location and intensity of sounds, spatial reflection, and other audio data to create immersive 3D sound experiences. It is integrating this technology across its 2025 TV and soundbar lineups, and creators will be able to upload Eclipsa Audio tracks to YouTube sometime this year.

Google and Samsung are also working with the Telecommunications Technology Association (TTA) to create a certification program for devices using Eclipsa Audio, similar to Dolby and THX certifications.

“We believe that Eclipsa Audio has the potential to change the way we experience sound,” Google vice president Jim Bankoski added. “We are excited to see how the creator community uses it to create new and innovative audio experiences.”
