At CES today, Google revealed that it will bring Gemini AI capabilities to Google TV later this year on select devices.
“We shared a preview of new AI capabilities for Google TV that use our Gemini models to make interacting with your TV more intuitive and helpful,” Google’s Shalini GovilPai writes in one of the shortest blog posts I’ve ever read. “You and your family will be able to gather together and have a natural conversation with your TV.”
According to Google, adding Gemini models to Google TV will allow customers to search media and “ask questions about travel, health, space, history and more, with videos in the results for added context.” It will be able to create custom artwork, control smart home devices while the TV is in ambient mode, and provide daily news overviews.
A report in Bloomberg provides more detail: The conversations will be started by saying “Hello, Google,” it will work with the user’s content stored in Google Photos, integrate more deeply with YouTube, and Hisense, Sony, and TCL are among the first partners that will use the new software. There’s also an always-on mode coming to Google TV that will light up the device when a user approaches to display information customized to them. But that feature may not debut until late 2025 at the earliest.
