Microsoft has quietly announced that it’s planning to change the sign-in experience for personal Microsoft accounts on the web in February 2025. Starting next month, users will no longer see the option to stay signed in or not after entering their credentials, which means that they will need to be more careful when using devices they don’t own.
“The web browser sign-in experience is changing when you sign in to any product or service using your Microsoft account. Starting in February 2025, you will stay signed in automatically unless you sign out or use private browsing,” the company explained in a support page.
Once that change to the sign-in experience goes into effect, the software giant recommends users accessing their Microsoft account on a device they don’t own to either sign out from it when they’re done or use a private browsing window. The latter prevents history, cookies, and other site data from being saved on the device.
It’s not exactly clear why Microsoft is implementing this change, but it will likely take time for people regularly accessing their Microsoft account on other devices to get used to it. In any case, the Microsoft account security dashboard makes it possible for users to sign out of browsers, apps, and anywhere else their account is used to sign in.
