Meta is reportedly planning to launch a standalone app for Meta AI, its AI chatbot that’s currently available on the web and within Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. CNBC is reporting that the company plans to launch the standalone app in the second quarter of 2025 to help it reach more users.
Susan Li, Meta’s Chief Financial Officer told analysts in January that Meta AI had crossed 700 million monthly active users, with India being the “largest market for Meta AI usage.” The chatbot has yet to become available in the EU and the UK, however.
Even though Meta AI apparently has a massive user base, Meta is quite late to release a standalone mobile app for its chatbot. xAI recently did it with Grok, which was first integrated into the X app before becoming available as a standalone app in January.
According to CNBC, Meta may soon start testing a paid version of Meta AI providing access to more advanced AI models. The chatbot is powered by Meta’s open-source Llama models, and the company will likely have some new announcements at its LlamaCon event on April 29.
Yesterday, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman shared some sarcastic comments in reaction to CNBC’s report. “Ok fine maybe we’ll do a social app,” Altman posted, adding “lol if facebook tries to come at us and we just uno reverse them it would be so funny.” Yes, the AI race may soon become a kindergarten.
