Microsoft’s Original Surface Hub Will Reach End of Support in October 2025

Thinking About the Future of Surface Hub

Microsoft’s original Surface Hub will no longer be supported after October 14, 2025, which is when the company will stop supporting its Windows 10 Team Edition software. Unfortunately, there’s no upgrade path for Surface Hub customers as the digital whiteboards won’t be able to migrate to Teams Rooms on Windows or Windows 11 Pro or Enterprise.

“Effective October 14, 2025, Microsoft will end support for Windows 10 Team edition on Surface Hub v1 and Surface Hub 2S. After this date, these devices will no longer receive security updates, patches, or support, and the Microsoft Teams app will stop functioning,” the company explained on its Surface IT Pro blog yesterday.

The original Surface Hub was released in 2016 in 55-inch and 84-inch variants, and the digital whiteboard shipped with Windows 10 Team, a customized version of Windows 10 Enterprise. As Windows 10 will reach end of support on October 14, 2025, Microsoft recommends customers to upgrade to Surface Hub 3, the latest version of the digital whiteboard released in December 2023.

The Surface Hub 2S, the 2019 successor to the original Surface Hub also runs Windows 10 Team, but customers can migrate these devices to Teams Rooms on Windows for free until October 14, 2025. It’s also possible to replace Windows 10 Team with Windows 11 Pro/Enterprise for Surface Hub 2S devices used in personal office scenarios.

Lastly, Microsoft offers Surface Hub 3 Compute Cartridges to convert Surface Hub 2S devices into a Surface Hub 3 with the new Teams Rooms on Windows experience. Microsoft promises up to 60% CPU performance and up to 160% GPU performance compared to the Surface Hub 2S, and the Teams Rooms on Windows platform was recently updated with Miracast wireless projection and Microsoft Edge support.
