Nintendo continues to struggle financially as it ramps up to launch the eagerly awaited Switch 2 videogame console. The firm posted a net income of $1.9 billion on revenues of $8 billion in the fiscal year ending March 31. But those figures represent drops of 43.2 percent and 30.3 percent, respectively, year-over-year (YOY). And the Switch 2 cannot happen quickly enough.
Nintendo sold 10.8 million Switch units in the fiscal year, down 31.2 percent from the 15.7 million units it sold the previous year. Nintendo has now sold 152.12 million Switch units, just shy of the 154 million Nintendo DS units it sold previously. Of the Switch consoles sold in the year, 5.86 million were the OLED model, 3 million were the standard Switch model, and 1.95 million were the Lite model.
Software sales fell 22.2 percent in the fiscal year to 155.41 million units. 24 titles–15 of which were made by Nintendo–have sold over one million units, with the bestsellers being Super Mario Party Jamboree (7.48 million units), Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (6.23 million), The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom (4 million), and Nintendo Switch Sports (3.16 million). Overall, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the best-selling Switch title of all time, with 68.2 million units sold.
128 million people played games on Nintendo Switch in the year, just below the 129 million figure from the previous year, and well ahead of the 119 million in reported two years ago.
Looking ahead, Nintendo expects to sell 15 million Switch 2 units and 4.5 million Switch units during its current fiscal year, plus 45 million units of Switch 2 software and 105 million units of OG Switch software; the Switch hardware and software numbers represented expected YOY declines of 58.3 percent and 32.4 percent, respectively.
Switch 2 launches on June 5, 2025, and Nintendo has a full slate of first party titles planned for the next several months across its key franchises.
