Xbox Job Listing Details Microsoft’s Game Preservation Efforts

Microsoft Xbox game preservation

Microsoft continues to hire talent for its new team dedicated to Xbox game preservation, and it’s doing so in a very public way. Yesterday, Jason Ronald, Microsoft’s new VP of Next Generation, shared a new job listing on X aimed at people “passionate about game preservation.”

The job listing is for a Principal Software Engineer position, and that person will be tasked with building “the next evolution in Xbox Game Compatibility.” Xbox Series X|S consoles currently support three generations of older games with OG Xbox, Xbox 360, and Xbox One titles, and Microsoft now appears to be preparing for a future where Xbox games can be played on any device. While that’s already possible thanks to Xbox Cloud Gaming, Microsoft wants to complete that with emulation.

“As a Principal Software Engineer in Xbox, you will coordinate across teams to define and implement the Xbox backward compatibility game security system to protect game assets while improving the experience for our customers. You will work with other experienced emulation engineers to deliver high quality solutions that not only protect game content but also improve the experience of installing compatible games. You will be a key contributor to the technology solutions developed to emulate legacy games on modern platforms,” the job listing reads. The job offering also mentions synergies across the Xbox and Windows gaming ecosystem, and the position will require candidates to create solutions that “enable system level emulation across the catalog of Xbox content.”

This is all quite exciting, and right in line with previous statements from Xbox President Sarah Bond.  “We are building on our strong history of delivering backwards compatibility to our players, and we remain committed to bringing forward the amazing library of Xbox games for future generations of players to enjoy,” the exec said in an email to employees back in April.
