Microsoft quietly announced last week that it will provide security updates for Microsoft 365 on Windows 10 PCs for three additional years. With Windows 10 reaching end of support on October 14, 2025, these apps will now remain supported until October 2028.
“To help maintain security while you transition to Windows 11, Microsoft will continue providing security updates for Microsoft 365 Apps on Windows 10 for three years after Windows 10 reaches end of support. These updates will be delivered through the standard update channels, ending on October 10, 2028,” the company said in a support page spotted by Neowin.
This is quite a big deal for Windows 10 users who aren’t ready yet to make the jump to Windows 11. Five months from its end of support, Windows 10 still remains the most popular version of the OS with a 52.94% market share according to Statcounter, with Windows 11 now clocking in at 43.42%.

There are a couple of caveats for Windows 10 users planning to use Microsoft 365 apps after October 2025: If an issue affects Office apps on Windows 10 and not Windows 11, Microsoft will just recommend users to move to Windows 11 or only provide troubleshooting assistance when upgrading is not possible. Moreover, Windows 10 users will no longer be able to log a bug or request other product updates for Microsoft 365 apps.
As a reminder, organizations and consumers planning to keep using Windows 10 beyond October 2025 will be able to pay for Microsoft’s Windows 10 Extended Security Updates program. Consumers will only be able to get security updates for a year with a $30 purchase. For organizations, however, getting Windows 10 updates for one device will cost $61/year, and this price will double every consecutive year.
For organizations looking for an alternative to the Windows 10 ESU program, Microsoft also announced a limited-time 20% discount on all Windows 365 plans for new customers. “Windows 10 PCs connecting to Windows 365 will continue to receive critical security updates beyond the official support deadline while workers enjoy the enhanced productivity and improved user experience of Windows 11 streamed from the Microsoft Cloud,” the company explained.
