Meta AI App Now Warns Users Before They Share Chats With Everyone Else

Meta has quietly tweaked its Meta AI after multiple reports pointed out that it made it way too easy for users to share their chats with everyone else. As reported by Business Insider yesterday, the app now shows a warning message when users hit the “share” button on a chat message.

“Prompts you post are public and visible to everyone. Your prompts may be suggested by Meta on other Meta apps. Avoid sharing personal or sensitive information,” the warning message reads.

The Meta AI mobile app, which officially launched in April, includes a “Discover” feed where users can share and explore how others are using the chatbot. However, it looks like not everyone understood how the feature actually works. As a result, this Discover feed, which is also available on the web, surfaced prompts and responses that included personal information shared by users without their knowledge.

In Meta’s eyes, the main purpose of this Discover feed is to inspire users to make better prompts. “You can see the best prompts people are sharing, or remix them to make them your own. And as always, you’re in control: nothing is shared to your feed unless you choose to post it,” the company explained.

However, people unaware of how this Discover feed works ended up sharing medical and tax records with everyone else, home addresses, confessions of affairs, and more. It really looks like the people at Meta didn’t give a lot of thought to the ability to share prompts and responses with other users without explicitly warning people not to overshare personal information.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg claimed last month that Meta AI crossed one billion monthly active users across the company’s family of apps, including Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. The standalone Meta AI app on the web and mobile devices is designed to work as a personal assistant that gets to know your preferences. However, this latest blunder is likely not going to inspire a lot of trust in the company’s AI chatbot.
