Trump Administration to Delay TikTok US Ban for Another 90 Days

The Trump administration will once again allow TikTok to continue operating in the US, despite a looming ban. Yesterday, the White House announced that President Trump will sign a new executive order to give ByteDance another 90 days to either divest TikTok or shut down the app’s US operations.

This will be the third time the TikTok sale deadline has been extended since President Trump came back to office in January. A bipartisan law that passed last year banned TikTok over national security risks, forcing its Chinese owner ByteDance to divest TikTok’s US business to avoid a national ban.

“President Trump does not want TikTok to go dark,” said White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt in a statement shared by CNN. “This extension will last 90 days, which the Administration will spend working to ensure this deal is closed so that the American people can continue to use TikTok with the assurance that their data is safe and secure.”

Last month, Reuters reported that the Trump administration was working on a deal that would “spin off TikTok’s U.S. operations into a new firm based in the United States and majority-owned and operated by U.S. investors.” However, that deal was put on ice due to the ongoing tariff dispute between the US and China.

As of today, multiple companies have expressed their interest in purchasing TikTok, including Oracle, Amazon, AI startup Perplexity, and mobile marketing platform AppLovin. However, it remains to be seen whether the Chinese government really intends to approve any deal.
