Meta announced yesterday that all videos uploaded on Facebook will soon be shared as reels. The company believes that this will make it easier to create videos on the platform with a streamlined creation process. As part of the change, the app’s video tab is also being renamed to “Reels.”
For those unfamiliar, reels is Meta’s name for the short-form, TikTok-like vertical video content designed mainly for mobile viewing. Until now, Facebook users looking to upload videos on the platform could choose between the “video” and “reel” formats, and the latter had different editing tools and a 90-second restriction.
“In the coming months, all videos on Facebook will be shared as reels, eliminating the need to choose between uploading a video or reel. Reels on Facebook will also not have any length or format restrictions,” the company explained.
Once all video posts on Facebook become reels, users will get more editing tools including effects and music options. Facebook users will also retain access to the same audience settings and controls as before, and the app will prompt them to confirm their audience settings once the transition to reels kicks in.
Overall, this is going to be quite a big change for the platform, but the Facebook team made it clear that all video content already posted on Facebook won’t change. “It will remain on your profile or Page for your audience to enjoy, and creators will be eligible for distribution.
On mobile, the new Reels tab won’t look different from the previous Video tab, and it will continue to show a personalized TikTok-like feed of videos based on your interests. Despite the increased focus on vertical videos, the Facebook team said that the platform remains “a home for all types of video – short, long, and Live.”
