Facebook Adds Passkeys Support on Mobile

Facebook Passkeys

Facebook has started rolling out support for passkeys on its mobile app. The secure digital credentials will allow Facebook users on mobile to log into their accounts using their fingerprint, face, or PIN. The Facebook team also plans to make passkeys available on its Messenger app in the coming months.

Meta is a member of the FIDO Alliance alongside Microsoft, Apple, Google, Amazon, and other tech companies committed to reducing the world’s reliance on passwords. Passkeys are more secure than passwords or one-time SMS codes as they can’t be easily guessed or stolen, and they should also be more convenient to use.

Facebook users will be able to create and manage passkeys in the app’s Account Center. Passkeys and their associated fingerprint, face scan, or PIN will always be stored on users’ devices, and they won’t replace other authentication methods including passwords and 2FA. Soon, the Facebook app will also start prompting users to create a passkey when they log into their account on mobile.

“Passkeys aren’t limited to logging in to your Facebook account. You’ll also be able to use your passkey to securely autofill payment information when making purchases using Meta Pay, and eventually to log in to Messenger and protect your encrypted message backups,” the company explained today.
