Microsoft Addresses Phil Spencer Retirement Rumor

Phil Spencer, the CEO of Microsoft Gaming is not planning his retirement after the company made significant job cuts across its Xbox division yesterday. Microsoft quickly shut down a rumor suggesting that Spencer was preparing to pass the torch to Sarah Bond, the current President of Xbox following the launch of the company’s next-gen console.

The initial claim was made by Call of Duty leaker TheGhostOfHope on X, who posted that “Phil Spencer will be retiring from his role as CEO of Microsoft Gaming after the launch of the next generation Xbox.” Frank X. Shaw, Microsoft’s Chief Communications Officer directly addressed the rumor on X and said it was “made up.” Kari Perez, head of Xbox communications, said in a statement to The Verge that “Phil is not retiring anytime soon.”

Phil Spencer spent his entire career at Microsoft and joined the Xbox team when the original console launched back in 2001. He later transitioned from head of Microsoft Studios to head of Xbox in 2014, playing a crucial role in redeeming the Xbox brand following the disastrous launch of the Xbox One. Spencer later became Executive Vice President of Gaming in 2017, reporting directly to Satya Nadella. He was then appointed CEO of Microsoft Gaming when the company announced its acquisition of Activision Blizzard in January 2022.

Spencer is known to be an avid gamer and someone who talks quite openly about Microsoft’s gaming strategy. In an internal memo shared yesterday, the exec acknowledged that this latest round of layoffs comes “at a time when we have more players, games, and gaming hours than ever before.” Still, Spencer added that “We must make choices now for continued success in future years and a key part of that strategy is the discipline to prioritize the strongest opportunities.”
