Gartner and IDC have weighed in on PC sales in the most recent quarter. And they have good news. And bad news.
PC makers sold 65.8 million units in the second quarter of 2025, a gain of 5.2 percent over the 62.4 million units sold in the year-ago quarter. That’s a nice gain for the venerable PC, but there are all kinds of caveats, Gartner and IDC say.
“In the second quarter of 2025, enterprise demand outpaced consumer demand, underpinned by Windows 11 migrations and pandemic-era desktop renewals, while consumer refreshes slowed as buyers deferred purchases,” Gartner research principal Rishi Padhi said. “PC shipments are forecast to rise 2.4 percent in 2025, propelled by a tariff-driven front-loaded inventory surge in the first half of 2025 in the U.S., and ongoing Windows 11 replacement cycles in the rest of the world. In the second half of 2025, shipment growth is expected to plateau as vendors draw down stock in response to demand, potentially creating excess inventory by year-end.”
“We expected the US market to cool down this quarter given the inventory buildup to begin the year, but what we’re witnessing here might highlight U.S. PC demand slowing down in anticipation of the import tariffs looming deadline,” IDC research VP Jean Philippe Bouchard added. “Despite a flat US PC market, the rest of the world demonstrated an appetite for PCs, fueled by an aging installed base and by a steady transition to Windows 11.”
There were no major changes in the top five PC makers. Lenovo continues to lead the industry with 17 million units sold in the quarter, a gain of 14.4 percent year-over-year (YOY) and good for just under 26 percent market share. HP came in second again, with 14.1 million units, 3.2 percent growth YOY, and 21.4 percent market share. And Dell was again in third place, with 9.8 million units, a decline of 3 percent YOY, and 14.9 percent market share.
Apple and Asus again rounded out the top five. Apple sold an estimated 5.95 million Macs in the quarter, a gain of almost 15 percent, giving it 9 percent market share. Asus sold 4.7 million units, with 11.7 percent growth and a market share of 7.1 percent.
