Meta Will Start Using Interactions With Meta AI for Ad Targeting

Meta will soon start using users’ interactions with its Meta AI chatbot for content recommendation and ad targeting purposes. The change will go live in most regions on December 16, and the company will begin notifying users about it next week.

Meta already uses interactions with Meta AI plus public content shared by adults on Meta products to train its AI models. Now, the company claims that using Meta AI activity will help to “improve your experience on all of our platforms,” with more personalized content and ads.

“Your interactions with content on Facebook and Instagram have long shaped what appears in your feed. Just like other personalized services, we tailor the ads and content you see based on your activity, ensuring that your experience evolves as your interests change. Many people expect their interactions to make what they see more relevant. Soon, interactions with AIs will be another signal we use to improve people’s experience,” the company explained.

Meta AI is available as a standalone app, but it’s also integrated into WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, and Facebook. While the chatbot is relatively easy to avoid right now, people using Meta AI may want to exercise more caution when discussing certain topics in their chats. Meta did say that it won’t use conversations revolving around religious views, sexual orientation, political views, health, racial or ethnic origin, philosophical beliefs, or trade union membership for ad targeting purposes, however.

Users of Meta products should start receiving emails and in-app notifications about the change next week. It will still be possible to use Ads Preferences and other feed controls to adjust the content and ads across Facebook and Instagram. And again, using Meta AI is still optional.
