The first movie adaptation of Minecraft, which ended up grossing nearly a billion dollars around the world, is getting a sequel. A July 23, 2027, release date was announced yesterday, and Variety reported that Jared Hess will return as a director.
Minecraft is the best-selling video game of all time with over 350 million copies sold as of 2025, and turning the sandbox game into a successful movie was certainly quite a challenge. The first film, which was released in the US back in April, starred Jason Momoa and Jack Black. We don’t know yet if the original cast will return for the sequel, however.

With $957 million at the box office, A Minecraft Movie is currently the second-highest-grossing Hollywood film of 2025 behind Disney’s Lilo & Stitch. It’s also the second-highest-grossing video game movie adaptation of all time behind the Super Mario Bros. animated film released back in 2023.
Minecraft was one of the first big acquisitions Microsoft made after Satya Nadella became CEO of the company back in 2014. The game remains a global cultural phenomenon, and even if Microsoft spent $2.5 billion to acquire the company, the return on investment must be huge. In comparison, the Redmond giant spent $68 billion to acquire Activision Blizzard back in October 2023, and Bloomberg recently reported that putting Call of Duty Black Ops 6 on day one on Game Pass led to $300 million in lost sales.
Call of Duty will soon come to the big screen as well as Activision recently announced a movie deal with Paramount. David Ellison, Chairman and CEO of Paramount, said that the company aims to “deliver a cinematic experience that honors the legacy of this one-in-a-million brand – thrilling longtime fans of Call of Duty while captivating a whole new generation.”
