Google will now deliver regular updates to its cellular service via new Feature Reveals for Google Fi Wireless. And the first of those looks pretty interesting.
“Feature Reveals for Google Fi Wireless are regular updates to solve common wireless problems,” Google senior product manager Jane Harnett writes. “This Feature Reveal includes new ways Google Fi Wireless is using Google AI and other new technology to give you a more reliable connection and easy to use features.”
Here’s what’s coming.
Wi-Fi Auto Connect improvements. This feature automatically puts Fi customers on premium Wi-Fi in supported major airports and malls, and it’s something I just experienced for the first time when we were flying home from Hawaii last month. But now Google is expanding this feature to millions of airports, malls, stores, and other locations.
AI noise filtering. Google Fi already offers HD calling, which does a great job of filtering out wind, construction, traffic, and other noises on phone calls. But now it will automatically use AI–enhanced audio for similar noise filtering when you are making a phone call to a landline or an older device too. This feature is coming in the the next few weeks and you will be able to disable it if desired.
Web calls and messages updates. Google Fi provides free connectivity for customers with select smartwatches, tablets, and laptops at no additional cost now. But it will soon add the ability to call, text and check voicemails from a web browser on any computer or tablet, even if your phone isn’t nearby. And the web client for messages will soon support RCS and high-resolution photo and video sharing too.
Improved in-app support. Google is expanding the support capabilities of the Fi app with AI. You will see AI-powered summaries of each bill and can ask for more details so you can learn why the cost changed month-or-month or how a plan change will impact your bill.
To celebrate these new features, Google is offering a limited-time promotion for new Fi subscribers: You can get 50 percent off for 15 months if you join the Unlimited Essentials or Unlimited Standard plan and bring your own phone. You can find out more at the Google Fi website.
