Chipmaker AMD announced that it earned a net income of $1.2 billion on revenues of $9.2 billion in the quarter ending September 27. Those figures represent gains of 61 percent and 36 percent, respectively, year-over-year (YOY).

“We delivered an outstanding quarter, with record revenue and profitability reflecting broad based demand for our high-performance EPYC and Ryzen processors and Instinct AI accelerators,” AMD chair and CEO Dr. Lisa Su said. “Our record third quarter performance and strong fourth quarter guidance mark a clear step up in our growth trajectory as our expanding compute franchise and rapidly scaling data center AI business drive significant revenue and earnings growth.”

In late 2024, Dr. Su said that she would shift AMD’s strategy to focus on the datacenter market and take on Nvidia. Since then, its Data Center business has been its biggest for three out of the past four quarters. And that was true of this quarter as well, with Data Center delivering $4 billion in revenues for a gain of 22 percent YOY. AMD cited “strong demand for 5th Gen AMD EPYC processors and AMD Instinct MI350 Series GPUs” for the success. But investors were expecting more from Data Center, and AMD’s stock fell 3 percent in extended trading Tuesday.

Regardless, AMD’s business looks solid. Client and Gaming landed another $4 billion in revenues, up 73 percent YOY. Client was responsible for $2.8 billion of that, up 46 percent YOY thanks to record sales of Ryzen processors for PCs. And Gaming revenues jumped 181 percent YOY to $1.3 billion. AMD’s Embedded business added $857 million in revenues, down 8 percent YOY.
