Anthropic Announces $50 Billion AI Infrastructure Plans

Anthropic said today that it will begin building its own AI infrastructure for the first time. It plans to spend $50 billion on datacenters in New York and Texas, and promises there will be more sites to come.

“We’re getting closer to AI that can accelerate scientific discovery and help solve complex problems in ways that weren’t possible before,” Anthropic cofounder and CEO Dario Amodei says. “Realizing that potential requires infrastructure that can support continued development at the frontier. These sites will help us build more capable AI systems that can drive those breakthroughs while creating American jobs.”

Anthropic says that it now has over 300,000 business customers, with the number of accounts that represent over $100,000 in run-rate revenue having increased nearly sevenfold in the past year. This demand necessitated the Anthropic investment in its own infrastructure, and it’s working with Fluidstack to get the new datacenters up and running as quickly as possible.

Separately, the Wall Street Journal reported today that Anthropic will be profitable long before industry darling OpenAI. The publication got ahold of internal financial documents from both companies. And in the latter case, those documents demonstrate that OpenAI expects to keep losing more money each year, with its losses in 2028 alone landing north of $74 billion. Coincidentally, that’s the year Anthropic expects to break even. But of course it hasn’t promised to spend $1.4 trillion on AI infrastructure like OpenAI has.
