ChatGPT’s Voice Mode is Now Built Into Chat Conversations

ChatGPT Voice Mode

OpenAI is changing how voice conversations work in ChatGPT by integrating them right into chat conversations. Until now, Voice chats were a separate mode showing a blue orb screen, but the new experience will show ChatGPT’s answers in real time in the chat window.

ChatGPT’s Voice mode lets users have hands-free conversations with the chatbot, and seeing its responses in real time is useful to see maps and other visual content created by the AI. While the new integrated experience will be enabled by default, the previous “Separate Mode” for voice chats will remain available in Settings → Voice → Separate Mode.

Voice Mode in ChatGPT is free to use, though there is a limit of hours each day for free users. It’s also possible to keep a conversation going in the background while switching to other apps or when the phone screen is locked. However, Voice mode currently doesn’t support image generation and other features like custom actions with GPTs.

In addition to higher usage limits, ChatGPT paid users can upload images while using voice mode, share their screen with the chatbot, or show it what their camera sees. However, usage of video and screen share capabilities is currently limited on a per-conversation basis.
