Netflix is Discontinuing Google Cast Support on Most Devices

Netflix mobile app

Netflix is in the process of discontinuing Google Cast support on its mobile apps. Google Cast currently lets users cast Netflix content from a mobile device to a smart TV, streaming device, or smart display that supports Google Cast, but this feature is now going away on most screens.

“Netflix no longer supports casting shows from a mobile device to most TVs and TV-streaming devices. You’ll need to use the remote that came with your TV or TV-streaming device to navigate Netflix,” the company explained in a support page spotted by Android Authority.

As you may know, Netflix previously removed Google Cast support for users on its ad-supported plan. I have a premium Netflix plan, and as of this writing, my Netflix app can still cast content on my old Google Chromecast 4K (the one without a remote) and my Google Nest Hub. However, my LG OLED Smart TV, which does support Google Cast, is no longer visible.

It doesn’t make a lot of sense to discontinue a nice-to-have feature for mobile users, but here we are. Some people just prefer to use their phone to navigate a service like Netflix rather than a TV remote, but Netflix doesn’t seem to care. Back in 2019, the platform also dropped support for Apple’s rival AirPlay technology, citing “technical limitations.”
