GOG is Leaving CD PROJEKT

GOG (formerly Good Old Games) announced that it is being acquired by one of its original cofounders so it can focus on videogame preservation. As a result, it is leaving its former owner, CD PROJEKT.

“Today, Michał Kiciński, one of the co-founders of CD PROJEKT, and the co-founder of GOG, has acquired GOG from CD PROJEKT,” the GOG announcement explains. “When Marcin Iwiński and Michał Kiciński first came up with the idea for GOG in 2007, the vision was simple: bring classic games back to players, and make sure that once you buy a game, it truly belongs to you, forever. In a market increasingly defined by mandatory clients and closed ecosystems, that philosophy feels more relevant than ever. This new chapter is about doubling down on that vision. We want to do more to preserve the classics of the past, celebrate standout games of today, and help shape the classics of tomorrow, including new games with real retro spirit.”

GOG has leaned heavily into digital rights management-free (DRM-free) game preservation in recent years, and it has always kept its GOG GALAXY game installer and management system separate from that and optional.

“GOG will remain independent in its operations,” the announcement notes, and CD PROJEKT RED games will continue to be available on the service. “We will continue building a platform that’s ethical, non-predatory, and made to last, while helping indie developers reach the world. We’re also committed to giving the community a stronger voice, with new initiatives planned for 2026.”

GOG was part of the CD PROJEKT Group for over 17 years and helped to bring titles like The Witcher and Cyberpunk 2077 to market during that time.

“With our focus now fully on an ambitious development roadmap and expanding our franchises with new high-quality products, we felt this was the right time for this move,” CD PROJEKT co-CEO Michał Nowakowski said. “For a long time now, GOG has been operating independently. Now it’s going into very good hands. We are convinced that with the support of Michał Kiciński, one of GOG’s co-founders, its future will be full of great projects and successes. We would like to thank the GOG team for years of fruitful cooperation and wish them all the best. And to the GOG community, I say ‘see you around’, because our upcoming releases will naturally be available on GOG as well.”
