Microsoft has started testing a new Copilot Checkout feature in its AI chatbot that lets US users shop for items without leaving the chat conversation. The feature leverages the Agentic Commerce Protocol, an open standard developed by OpenAI and Stripe that also powers ChatGPT’s Instant Checkout feature.
Copilot Checkout is rolling out first on Copilot.com in the US, and it will also be integrated into the Copilot experiences across Bing, MSN, and Microsoft Edge. In practice, Copilot users will be able to search for items and complete purchases right from the conversation, with businesses still keeping customer data and all transaction details.
Microsoft is already testing Copilot Checkout with Urban Outfitters, Anthropologie, Ashley Furniture, and Etsy sellers. Shopify merchants are automatically allowed to sell items in Copilot Checkout, and Microsoft created a straightforward onboarding experience for other merchants using PayPal and Stripe. A merchant application form is also available on this page.
While Copilot Checkout allows merchants to meet customers where they’re searching for information, Microsoft is also working on brand AI agents that can be integrated into websites with Shopify stores. These brand agents will work as shopping assistants that can help customers find the right products, complete a purchase, and recommend complementary products. You can learn more about how to set up brand agents for Shopify sites on this page.
