I have been pleasantly surprised by how well Ubuntu is running on my Surface Pro 5. Feels snappy, and Steam runs well. This is a low end model, i5 with 8gb RAM.
Some web apps needed for things like WhatsApp. Touchscreen working well too.
A few quirks- webcam not working yet, WiFi can get spotty after repeated sleep cycles…
Overall really happy with it so far – mostly just using it for web browsing and light gaming.
Still easier for some things to use the terminal. I am not complaining about that.
Anyway, I am glad it’s an option and that it breathes new life into hardware I might otherwise have abandoned.
This experiment makes me feel confident about moving my main desktop to Linux once the Win 10 support ends. (The motherboard isn’t supported for Win 11, but the hardware is otherwise all good so I intend on using it until it dies)
