Discord Will Reportedly Give Nitro Subscribers Free Game Pass ‘Starter Edition’

Discord Xbox Game Pass

Xbox CEO Asha Sharma teased a new partnership with Discord earlier this week, and it looks like details have leaked ahead of an official announcement. The Discord Previews account on X (via The Verge), which specializes in uncovering new Discord features, found traces of a new Game Pass “Starter Edition” perk for Discord Nitro subscribers.

A leaked image of this new Discord Nitro reward says that the new Starter Edition tier for Game Pass includes “50+ games like Stardew Valley, Fallout 4, and Gounded,” 10 hours of cloud gaming every month, and Xbox rewards. Nitro members will also be able to use the cloud gaming perk to stream select Xbox games they own.

Microsoft already gives Game Pass Ultimate members limited-time Discord Nitro codes, and soon, we should see Discord throw an Xbox bone to its Nitro subscribers. This seems like a smart way to get more people to try Game Pass and Xbox Cloud Gaming, and with 50+ games, this new Starter Edition tier will roughly match the number of games available on the $9.99/month Game Pass Essential tier. It’s not clear yet if the list of games will be similar across the two tiers, however.

Asha Sharma and Xbox chief content officer Matt Booty published a long email to employees yesterday detailing their “master plan” for the Xbox division. “Microsoft Gaming” is no more, and the two execs said that they would “fortify Game Pass with clear differentiation and sustainable economics.”

Earlier this week, Microsoft dropped the price of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass, which will no longer get new Call of Duty games on day one. This new Game Pass Starter Edition that Discord will be offering to Nitro subscribers could pave the way for similar partnerships with other companies. Earlier this month, Netflix co-CEO Greg Peters told The Information that he “kicked around ideas” about new subscription bundles with Sharma.
