More details about new iOS 27 features are starting to leak ahead of Apple’s WWDC developer conference in June. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman is reporting this week that the next major iOS update will introduce a new Siri mode in the iPhone Camera app, as well as new AI-powered editing features in the iOS Photos app.
The new Siri mode will reportedly appear alongside the Photo and Video capture options in the Camera app. It will also integrate the existing Visual Intelligence feature available on recent iPhones that support Apple Intelligence.
“The new mode will let users point the camera at an object and tap into services such as ChatGPT to ask questions about the object or scene. Users can also run a Google reverse image search to pull up more information,” Gurman explained.
Visual Intelligence is currently available right from the new Camera Control button that made its debut on the iPhone 16 series, and Gurman reports that this shortcut will launch the new Siri mode within the camera app on iOS 27. When using this new mode, the Camera will display a new shutter button showing the Apple Intelligence logo in place of the current white capture button.
“Beyond integration into the camera, Apple is expanding the feature with additional in-house capabilities. That includes the ability to scan a nutrition label on food packaging to log dietary information. Users will also be able to capture and add contact details directly from what the camera sees,” Gurman reported.
Apple’s Photos app will also gain new AI-powered editing features on iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27. In addition to the existing “Clean Up” tool available on devices that support Apple Intelligence, the company will reportedly introduce new Enhance, Extend, and Reframe tools. The first one will use AI to improve image quality, while Extend will use generative AI to fill in the surroundings of a picture. The Reframe tool, however, will be able to shift the perspective of 3D photos viewed on the Apple Vision Pro.
According to Gurman, “the Extend and Reframe tools don’t perform reliably during internal testing,” and there’s a possibility that Apple could delay or rework them. The company is planning a big AI push later this year, and a long-awaited Siri update will make the assistant available as a dedicated app that can act on multiple requests at once.
