Google Gemini Can Now Generate Downloadable Documents

Google Gemini generate files

Google’s Gemini chatbot is getting the ability to generate downloadable documents to use with Microsoft Office and other productivity apps. Users just need to ask Gemini what type of document they want to create and the type of file they need, include attachments to the prompt if needed, and Gemini will do the rest.

“With just a prompt, Gemini can now create PDFs, Microsoft Word and Excel, Google Docs, Sheets, Slides and more directly in your chat, meaning you can quickly move from a brainstorm to a complete file without ever leaving the Gemini app. Instead of copying, pasting and reformatting, this update will allow you to easily move your work into different applications,” Google explained in the announcement.

This new file generation capability is available for all Gemini users globally. The list of supported file formats that Gemini can generate includes Google Workspace files (which can be exported directly to Google Drive), Office files (.docx, .xlsx, .csv), PDFs, LaTeX, Plain Text (TXT), Rich Text Format (RTF), and Markdown (MD).

Gemini isn’t the first chatbot to get the ability to generate downloadable documents from a text prompt: Anthropic previously introduced file creation capabilities for Claude users last fall, but this was initially restricted to users on a paid plan.
