Perplexity’s new Personal Computer feature, which can turn a Mac into an autonomous AI agent, is now available for all Mac users. The agentic feature was previously restricted to Perplexity Max subscribers, but it’s now free to access via a new version of the Perplexity app for macOS. However, Personal Computer still requires a Perplexity Pro and Max subscription.
Personal Computer is a local version of the cloud-based Perplexity Computer feature that launched back in February (https://www.perplexity.ai/hub/blog/introducing-perplexity-computer). After installing it on a Mac, Personal Computer can work 24/7 and run tasks locally using Mac apps and web-based apps. It can also be controlled remotely from the Perplexity mobile app.
“Personal Computer in the Perplexity Mac app allows Perplexity Computer to run continuously, autonomously, and locally. It can work with local files and native Mac apps, operate on the open web, and orchestrate tools, files, 400+ connectors, and personal context in a secure development sandbox on Perplexity servers,” Perplexity explained today.
With services like Perplexity’s Personal Computer and Openclaw, we’re seeing the rise of self-hosted AI assistants that can operate continuously. This growing interest in local AI agents also explains why Apple’s Mac mini and Mac Studio are currently in short supply.
If you’re interested in trying Perplexity’s Personal Computer, you’ll need to download the new Perplexity Mac app from the company’s website (https://www.perplexity.ai/personal-computer). The AI startup said today that its previous Mac app will be deprecated in the coming weeks.
