Sony Sold 1.5 Million PS5s in Quarter, Down 46 Percent

Sony reported that it earned an operating profit of 164 billion yen on revenues of 3.036 trillion yen in the quarter ending March 31, 2026. But it only sold 1.5 million PlayStation 5 videogame consoles in the quarter, a decline of 46 percent year-over-year (YOY), and its smallest ever figure for the hardware.

Sony was forced to raise the price of its PS5 consoles last month because of the ongoing component crisis, and this issue has impacted other parts of its business, like smartphones. But focusing just on the Game & Network Services business that sells PlayStation hardware, software, and services, you can see problems everywhere.

As noted, Sony sold 1.5 million PS5 consoles in its fiscal 2025 fourth quarter. In the previous four quarters sequentially, it sold 7.9 million, 4 million, 2.5 million, and 2.8 million consoles. For fiscal year 2025, Sony sold 16 million PS5s, down from 18.5 million in FY24.

First-party software title sales in the quarter across PS4 and PS5 were 74.6 million, down from 76.1 million one year ago. 85 percent of those games were purchased electronically (as opposed to on physical media), up from 80 percent one year ago. For the year, Sony sold 318 million first-party software titles, up from 303.3 million one year ago.

Financially, Game & Network Services is pretty much flat from the same quarter one year ago, with a bit over one billion yen in each and just a slight decline. Hardware revenues were 110 million yen, down from 183 million yet a year ago. Game Software revenues were 636 million yen, up from 625 million yen one year ago. Hardware revenues were down slightly for the fiscal year and up slightly for Game Software.

PlayStation monthly active users were 133 million, up from 124 million one year ago. Total PlayStation 5 console sales are now 93.5 million, a respectable number for sure, but slowing dramatically.
