Google announced a nice set of functional updates to its Google Fi wireless service. Each is available with the Fi Unlimited Premium plan at no extra cost.
“The latest Google Fi Wireless updates will make your next trip abroad easier, just in time for summer travel,” Google senior product manager Jane Harnett writes. “We’re expanding our coverage and speed, [and] security and connectivity features will work in even more international destinations.”
Here’s what’s new.
Better international network switching. Those with Pixel phones have always been able to switch between available and compatible wireless networks in the U.S. and abroad. But now, Pixels on Fi can switch more quickly and seamlessly between multiple international networks in real time using Multiple Enabled Profiles (MEP) in a single eSIM.
More 5G. Google Fi is now available in 5G in 23 new locations, for a total of over 110 countries. This also works on data-only eSIMs, which you can use to share your network coverage on up to five other cellular-enabled devices at no extra cost.
VPN availability improvements. VPN by Google is now available in more destinations, including South Korea and Japan. You can find the complete list of supported countries on the Google Support site.
Wi-Fi Auto-Connect+ improvements. Wi-Fi Auto-Connect+ (W+) automatically connects Fi customers to supported, high-quality Wi-Fi networks around the world. It’s been limited to North America, but it’s rolling out now in Europe and Asia in select locations.
Simpler setup and support. Google has improved the Google Fi onboard process so you can set it up more quickly and reliably on an Android device. And if you have connectivity problems later, Fi will automatically detect and fix technical issues and provide step-by-step guides if a manual adjustment is required.
Half off for new Google Fi Unlimited Premium subscribers. Through the end of June, Google is offering its Fi Unlimited Premium subscription for 50 percent off to new customers for the first year.
