Surface Pro and Surface Laptop Snapdragon X2

Microsoft is launching today new consumer versions of its Surface Pro and Surface Laptop that use Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon X2 chips. The new 13-inch Surface Pro starts at $1,499, while the 13.8-inch and 15-inch Surface Laptop start at $1,599.

Microsoft’s refreshed Surface lineup for consumers launches just a month after Microsoft released new Surface Pro and Surface Laptop models for businesses with Intel Core Ultra Series 3 CPUs. Prices start at $1,499 for the 13-inch Surface Laptop for Business, but the new 13-inch Surface Pro and 13.3-inch Surface Laptop for Business now have a much higher $1,949.99 starting price.

Microsoft said today that business versions of its new Qualcomm-powered Surface devices will also be available on July 14. The 13-inch Surface Pro for Business with Snapdragon X2 chips will start at $1,649.99, and the 13.8-inch Surface Laptop will have the same starting price.

New Surface Pro 13-inch with Snapdragon X2

The new 13-inch Surface Pro for consumers is available with a 10-core Snapdragon X2 Plus or a 12-core Snapdragon X2 Elite chip. Both chips come with an 80 TOPS NPU for AI workloads, up from 45 TOPS on Qualcomm’s 1st-gen chips for Windows PCs.

Microsoft says that Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X2 chips offer up to 53% faster graphics performance than the previous generation, and up to 15.5 hours of local video playback (up from 14 hours on the previous generation). The base configuration of the 13-inch Surface Pro comes with 16GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, but it can be configured with up to 64GB of memory and 1TB of storage.

While there’s still an optional OLED display option on the new 13-inch Surface Pro, Microsoft isn’t offering a version of the tablet with 5G cellular connectivity yet. The selection of ports also doesn’t change, with two USB-C ports and a Surface Connect port for charging, plus Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4 connectivity.

The new 13-inch Surface Pro with Snapdragon X2 is available in Platinum, Black, and Dune, and the optional Surface Pro Flex Keyboard ($399.99) is also available in the new Dune color. From June 16 through June 30, US customers can get a free Surface Pro 13-inch Keyboard ($169.99 value) when purchasing the new tablet. If you’re in the EU, be aware that the tablet’s power supply must be purchased separately.

Surface Laptop 13.8-inch and 15-inch with Snapdragon X2

The new 13.8-inch and 15-inch Surface Laptops offer pretty much the same configuration options as the 13-inch Surface Pro, with 10-core Snapdragon X2 Plus and 12-core X2 Elite chips and up to 64GB of RAM. However, the 13.8-inch model starts with 512GB of storage in the US, while the international model starts with just 256GB. However, the 15-inch version starts with 512GB of storage in all markets, and the maximum amount of storage is 2TB on both the 13.8-inch and 15-inch models.

Compared to the previous models, the 13.8-inch Surface Laptop still delivers up to 20 hours of video playback, but that number drops from 22 hours to 19 hours on the 15-inch model. The latter does come with a sharper 3270 x 2180 (262 PPI) LCD display, compared to 2496 x 1664 (201 PPI) on the previous version.

On the connectivity front, there’s still the same selection of ports with two USB-C ports, one USB-A port, one Surface Connect port for charging, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. The 15-inch Surface Laptop still adds a MicroSDXC card reader to the mix. There are also no changes to Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4 connectivity.

In addition to Platinum, Black, and Dune, the 13.8-inch Surface Laptop is now available in a new Jade color. The Surface Laptop now starts at $1,599, which is $100 more expensive than the previous model. Again, the power supply is included in the box in all markets except in the EMEA region. From June 16 through June 30, US customers can also get a free Surface Arc Mouse when purchasing a 13.8-inch or 15-inch Surface Laptop.

“Surface is investing everywhere. From entry points to ultra-premium performance, from the enterprise to the individual maker,” wrote Brett Ostrum, Corporate Vice President of Surface at Microsoft. Later this year, the company will launch a new Surface Laptop Ultra powered by Nvidia’s new ARM-based RTX Spark chip. The company will also put the same chip into the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box, a new workstation for AI developers who need sustained local compute.
