Microsoft Has Reportedly Discontinued its Entry-Level Surface Go and Surface Laptop Go

Microsoft has reportedly discontinued its entry-level Surface Go and Surface Laptop Go, which haven’t been refreshed in years. Both devices are currently absent from Microsoft’s website, and according to Windows Central’s Zac Bowden, production has already ended, with no new versions in the pipeline.

“Sources say that Surface Go and Surface Laptop Go stock may still exist at certain retailers and in certain regions, but once that stock has depleted, it won’t be replaced,” Bowden wrote. The publication reached out to Microsoft for comment, and a company representative just pointed them to the Microsoft website, which now only advertises Surface Pro and Surface Laptop models.

There have been four generations of the Surface Go, and the latest model was released in October 2023, but only for business customers, with prices ranging from $579 to $779. There were 3 iterations of the Surface Laptop Go, and the latest model was also released in October 203 with a $799 starting price.

Both the Surface Go and Surface Laptop Go only used Intel processors, but Bowden reports that Microsoft canceled plans for a Qualcomm-powered Surface Laptop Go 5. “Unfortunately, when the company asked its enterprise customers for feedback, it found that most of them weren’t interested in an Arm version of the device, and so that plan was scrapped,” Bowden explained.

“I’m told that the decision to kill off these devices wasn’t influenced by the ongoing RAMpocalypse, as the decision was made many months before memory prices became a problem for the company,” the reporter also said. As of today, the cheapest Surface devices on the market are the Qualcomm-powered 12-inch Surface Pro starting at $849,99, and the 13-inch Surface Laptop starting at $949.99.
