Nvidia Microsoft Open Secure AI Alliance

Nvidia announced today that it has teamed up with Microsoft and other big tech companies to launch the Open Secure AI Alliance, which will be tasked with developing and sharing open tools to improve cybersecurity. The new alliance launches just a couple of days after an internal OpenAI model escaped the company’s sandbox to attack the production infrastructure of AI platform Hugging Face.

In its security incident disclosure published on July 16, Hugging Face explained that it first tried to use commercial frontier models to analyze the AI-driven intrusion. However, the company quickly had to switch to open-weight models to overcome the limitation of closed AI tools.

“That incident showed a practical truth: when defenders cannot inspect, adapt and run advanced AI on their own infrastructure, their ability to respond is constrained at exactly the moment speed matters most. Companies and countries need open frontier defensive tools and techniques so critical industries can build security systems across a multi-vendor ecosystem and avoid single points of failure. That is the mission of the Open Secure AI Alliance: to ensure defenders everywhere have open, frontier tools they can trust and control,” Nvidia explained today.

Along with Microsoft and Nvidia, the Open Secure AI Alliance brings together high-profile tech companies and organizations including Adobe, Cloudflare, CrowdStrike, Dell, Hugging Face, the Linux Foundation, OpenClaw, Red Hat, and Salesforce. OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google are notably absent from the new industry alliance.

Going forward, the Open Secure AI alliance will work to ensure that “defenders everywhere have open, frontier tools they can trust and control. Nvidia itself will be contributing open models and other tools to “speed the development of new cybersecurity tools and techniques.” As for Microsoft, the company will be contributing with MDASH, its new agentic AI system for finding security vulnerabilities.
