ChatGPT Free Users Can Now Enjoy Unlimited Text Chats

OpenAI announced yesterday that free ChatGPT users can now enjoy unlimited text conversations with the chatbot. ChatGPT will also now use the new GPT‑5.6 Luna model by default, while Plus and Pro users are getting an updated GPT‑5.6 Sol model that now provides “more focused answers” that are also “more reliable with facts.”

“GPT‑5.6 Luna will become the default model for Free and Go users this week. Starting next week, they’ll also have unlimited text chats and access to a new Think button for harder questions (subject to abuse guardrails). Limits will still apply for file uploads, images and other tools,” the company explained yesterday.

By upgrading the free version of ChatGPT with unlimited text conversations, OpenAI is making the value proposition of its $8/month ChatGPT Go plan less clear. The main purpose of ChatGPT Go was to be able to use the chatbot much more without the need for the latest and greatest models. Now, ChatGPT Go still offers more voice chats, messages with tools, uploads, image creations, as well as a longer memory, but the free version of ChatGPT will probably be more than enough for most people.

Yesterday, OpenAI also announced the launch of a unified Adobe plugin in ChatGPT that connects to over 70 tools in the company’s suite of apps. The new plugin also integrates with Codex and the new ChatGPT Work experience that launched last month alongside OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 models.
