Spotify is about to make it more obvious that the music you are listening to on the platform may be AI-generated. Starting in September, the company will be rolling out new AI Persona badges to distinguish artists who disclosed that their public identity is AI-generated, as well as other artist profiles that didn’t disclose that information.
The Spotify team explained that these new AI persona badges are designed to improve transparency regarding AI-generated music and artist identities. The platform already rolled out ‘Verified’ badges to highlight “authentic” artists, and the AI Credits and SongDNA features can also be used to understand how music on the platform was made. However, the Spotify team acknowledged that it’s probably too easy to be fooled by AI-generated personas.
“This badge is about the artist’s public identity, not about how the music was made,” the team explained. “With AI credits, we have seen that people are eager to take the opportunity to be transparent and share how they used AI as part of their song’s creative process. We’re hoping for a similar level of self-disclosure for AI Personas.”
Through the Spotify for Artists hub, artists can now disclose that their profile represents an AI Persona instead of an “authentic” artist, and the AI Persona badge will start appearing on their profiles in September. The Spotify team will also start investigating relevant artist profiles that may be using “photorealistic AI-generated identities” without disclosing it, and these profiles will also get an AI Persona badge when necessary.
“In the coming months, we’ll also give listeners the ability to report artist profiles they believe represent AI Personas to our review team,” the Spotify team added. Lastly, Spotify aims to only “highlight authentic human artists,” and that’s why users won’t see music from AI Personas in their algorithmic recommendations unless they already follow them.
