Proton announced a new Categories feature for Proton Mail that automatically sorts your inbox into presorted category views while maintaining the app’s security and privacy protections.
“It’s easier to tame your inbox when emails are pre-sorted into categories like primary, social, promotions, or newsletters,” Proton’s Anant Vijay Singh writes. “Now you can cut through the noise while protecting your privacy with Proton Mail Categories.”
Proton Mail Categories provides several preset categories–Primary, Social, Promotions, Newsletters, Transactions, and Updates–and automatically sorts incoming email messages accordingly. The Categories feature is on by default for new users and can be disabled at any time. If you’re already using Proton Mail, you’ll be asked if you’d like to enable this.
Either way, you can customize Categories by choosing which you want to see and use, plus determine which display notifications and/or an unread count. If an email message appears in the wrong category view, you can move it, and Proton will update the filters.
As with everything else Proton does, Proton Mail Categories doesn’t impact any of the product’s protections, like zero-access encryption, and end-to-end encryption between two Proton Mail accounts.
