ChatGPT App is Now Available on Intel-Based Macs

OpenAI has quietly made its ChatGPT desktop app available on Intel-based Macs. Until now, the app was only available on Apple Silicon models, but the installer for the new x86 version is available on the ChatGPT download page, as first spotted by the Japanese website AAPL Ch. (via MacGeneration).

Reddit users reported two months ago that this new ChatGPT client for Intel-based Macs was hidden on the app’s download page, but that’s no longer the case. This is the same “super app” that combines the regular chat experience, Codex, and a new “Work” mode designed for long-running tasks that may involve local files.

For users on Apple Silicon Macs, the “classic” ChatGPT app without Codex and the new Work mode is still available to download, but it’s no longer OpenAI’s main focus. In the new app, accessing the traditional chat experience now requires users to select ChatGPT, then select Chat in the switcher at the top of the new chat page above the composer.

If the upcoming macOS 27 Golden Gate drops support for Intel-based Macs, ChatGPT for Mac currently works on macOS 14 Sonoma or newer. OpenAI also recently released a ChatGPT app for Linux in preview, and supported distributions include Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and 26.04 LTS, Debian 13, and Fedora 43 and 44.
