Disc to Digital Licensing is Now Available on All Xbox Series X and Xbox One Consoles

Xbox Disc to Digital licensing

Xbox’s new disc-to-digital program is now available on all Xbox Series X and Xbox One consoles. The new feature allows gamers to get a digital license for a supported game when it’s inserted into their Xbox console while they’re signed into their Xbox profile.

Disc-to-digital licensing first launched for Xbox Insiders a couple of weeks ago, but Microsoft has to get all video game publishers on board. Ubisoft and Sega recently agreed to join the program, though digital licenses can only be obtained for supported Xbox One or Xbox Series X games, leaving Xbox 360 games on the sidelines.

With a disc-to-digital license, Xbox gamers also get access to Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming for games that support those features. However, gamers will lose their digital license for a game if someone else puts it in their console and links it to their Xbox account.

When users insert a supported game disc into an Xbox console, they will see a confirmation message letting them know they’ve received their digital license. In a support page, Microsoft also noted that for physical editions of games that contain DLCs, “content included on the qualifying disc may be included with the disc-to-digital license.”

However, this new disc-to-digital program is a nice gamer-friendly feature that should help to keep gamers who bought a lot of physical games in the Xbox ecosystem. While we don’t know yet if Project Helix, the next-gen Xbox console, will support physical discs, Microsoft is at least making a pro-gamer move after Sony got a lot of bad buzz after announcing the end of physical discs for new PS5 games in January 2028
