Google Playground is a new experimental tool for creating, playing, and sharing custom videogames that run in a web browser on desktop computers and mobile devices.
“Game creation has historically been limited to a select group of people who have technical experience and knowledge of complex game engines,” Google software engineer Maryam Karimzadehgan writes. “Today, we’re introducing Playground, an experimental gaming platform that lets you create, play, and share custom games. Playground lowers the barriers to creation, so bringing game ideas to life can now be as easy as describing it through a few prompts [with] no coding experience required.”
Playground provides a conversational interface through which you use natural language to describe the game you want to create, and you can do so from scratch, by remixing other Playground-created games, or with a wizard-like set of guided prompts. As hinted at above, It also provides a growing library of vibe-coded games for you to enjoy and build off. You can share the games you make similarly or keep them private, and Playground games support in-game leaderboards, multiplayer gameplay in select genres, Play Games profiles, custom handles, and more.
Playground will also soon support Unity Spark integration, which will let users access the environment’s professional game mechanics, 3D capabilities, and everything else the Unity runtime delivers. Unity Spark support is currently in internal testing with a closed beta coming soon. You can sign up for the waitlist on the Playground website.
Playground requires a Google AI subscription, and it’s currently limited to users in the United States who are 18 years or older. You can try it for yourself on the Google Playground website.
