When Microsoft announced the availability of the Surface 3 4G LTE in the US back in July, it planned to ship unlocked versions of the device in late August. With August now behind us, however, the firm has updated the scheduled, and announced new delivery dates for the unlocked Surface 3 4G LTE in the US, but also in Canada, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom.
Actually, the original Surface 3 4G LTE announcement for the US was a bit more muddled than I suggest above. Microsoft originally stated on July 24 that the device was shipping from AT&T Wireless but also in unlocked form from its own retail and online stores and from other retailers. Later in the day, it corrected this mistake and noted that “the unlocked versions of Surface 3 (4G LTE) will be available in the U.S. through Microsoft stores, authorized resellers and partner retailers in late August.”

A quick peek at the calendar will reveal that today is September 1, however, and the unlocked Surface 3 4G LTE is nowhere to be seen in the US. So Microsoft has updated the schedule. And it has provided information about the unlocked Surface 3 4G LTE in other key markets too.
“The unlocked variant of Surface 3 (4G LTE) will be released on September 19 in the US and Canada, and October 2 in France, Germany and United Kingdom,” Microsoft’s Brian Hall notes. “Customers can pre-order the device at Microsoft Stores in the US starting September 3 and September 10 in Canada.”
So there you go.
Now we can move on to wondering why there was never a 4G LTE version of Surface Pro 3. I assume we’ll see such a thing with Surface Pro 4, preferably at launch.
