Now Available: Surface Book and Surface Pro 4

Microsoft’s new Surface devices—Surface Book and Surface Pro 4—are available for purchase today in the United States and Canada, as are a number of new Surface accessories, including the new Surface Pen and Surface Dock.

As I’m sure you know, I’ve written the first of two reviews I have planned for Surface Book, a Surface Pro 4 review, and a hands-on overview of the new Surface Dock, and these articles should help you get up to speed on the new hardware. But what these devices all share is a level of quality rarely seen in the PC space, both in terms of hardware and the overall experience. And if you’re been looking for the best possible Windows 10 experience, look no further than this family of devices.

One of the big questions I’ve received about these devices is when they’ll be available in other markets. Microsoft says only that additional markets will follow in November, which I know is annoyingly vague. But with Surface sold in over 30 markets around the world, you can expect Surface Pro 4 and Surface Book to become available more broadly fairly quickly, I think.

You can also experience these devices in person if you live near a Microsoft Store, which I recommend, especially for Surface Book, which is an all-new design. In using the Core i7 version of Surface Book past my initial review—I will be reviewing this model soon—I have found it to be more reliable than the pre-release Core i5 version I previously reviewed. That’s a good sign, as I was a bit worried about some aspects of that first device.

What a difference three years make. In 2012, Microsoft launched only Surface RT alongside Windows 8, and neither product was well-received by customers. Surface Pro debuted in January 2013, and was the better device, though its thick and heavy frame and tiny screen held it back a bit. Today, we have an incredible collection of Surface devices from which to choose, and while each is incredibly versatile, none of them come bearing major compromises.

Anyway, in a season of incredible Microsoft announcements and product releases, today is a big, big day.
